Not by works…

Good works are the result or fruit of salvation, but never the means to it.

  • For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10, ESV
  • What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Romans 4:1-3, ESV
  • For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another. But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our savior, so the being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:3-7, ESV

Our works of righteousness cannot add up to what Christ has already accomplished.

  • whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be recieved by faith. This was to show God’s righeousness, because in his devine forbearance he had passed over former sins. Romans 3:25, ESV
  • He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2, ESV

Your “works of righteousness” cannot justify you - or sanctify you. Instead, put your faith solely in the fact that we are justified through the death of Jesus Christ. God saves us according to his mercy, not on the basis of deeds that we have done.

  • For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Romans 3:23-24, ESV

Godspeed.
